Tourist submarine sinks with children onboard, killing at least six

Tragic Submarine Accident in the Red Sea: Multiple Fatalities in Hurghada

A tragic accident has occurred in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt, where a tourist submarine carrying approximately 44 passengers, including children, sank during an excursion to explore the coral reefs.

The incident resulted in several fatalities and injuries, sparking a large-scale rescue operation.

The Incident

According to local reports, the tourist submarine Sindbad was in the Hurghada area, preparing for a scheduled underwater excursion. The submarine offers tourists a unique opportunity to view the region’s vibrant marine life and coral reefs. However, on Thursday, the submarine started sinking, leading to a tragic disaster.

The submarine sank in front of a hotel marina in Hurghada, resulting in six confirmed deaths and nine injuries, with four people reported in critical condition. Fortunately, 29 passengers were rescued safely.

A swift rescue operation was launched, with the Red Sea Health Directorate and the Egyptian Ambulance Authority on high alert. A total of 21 ambulances, along with security and rescue forces, were dispatched to the scene.

About the Sindbad Submarine

Sindbad Submarine has been offering tourist excursions in Hurghada for several years. The company operates one of the world’s only “real recreational submarines,” which can descend to depths of 82 feet, providing a clear view of the coral reefs and marine life.

The submarine is equipped with 44 passenger seats, two pilot seats, and large round viewing windows designed to provide an unparalleled underwater experience. According to the company, passengers enjoy a 40-minute trip below sea level to view the coral and fish, with divers present to capture memorable photographs.

Casualties and Conflicting Reports

The governor’s office in Hurghada confirmed six fatalities, but the nationalities of the victims were not specified. The Russian embassy in Egypt later stated that all the passengers were Russian citizens but reported only four fatalities, conflicting with the local authorities’ figures. The Russian Telegram channel Baza also reported that one of the deceased was a child.

Tourism in Hurghada and Safety Concerns

Hurghada, located in Egypt’s Red Sea governorate, is a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year. In 2022, over four million tourists visited the region, with German nationals comprising the largest group. Other significant nationalities included Russians, Czechs, and Poles.

Despite Hurghada’s popularity, the UK government issued a safety warning in February regarding liveaboard diving holidays in the Red Sea. This came after 16 accidents over the past five years, including the loss of three dive boats in the last 21 months, which resulted in multiple fatalities. The UK government advised travelers to book these holidays only through reputable vendors and to request a thorough safety briefing from the crew.
