On Sunday, March 16, a plane carrying suspected members of a Venezuelan gang landed in El Salvador, and Donald Trump appeared in high spirits.
Despite a federal judge overturning the order, the Trump administration proceeded with a directive to transfer 238 alleged criminals to a massive prison in El Salvador.
Trump’s administration justified the action by claiming the U.S. was facing an “invasion” from a criminal group linked to kidnapping, contract killings, and other organized crimes. Using a wartime law from the 18th century, Trump authorized the deportation of the suspected members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
The mega-prison, which opened in 2023, is one of the largest in the world and now houses tens of thousands of inmates with gang affiliations.
El Salvador’s President Bukele shared images and videos on social media showing the prisoners being handcuffed and escorted from the plane to a heavily guarded vehicle.
“The United States will pay a very low fee for them, but we will pay a high one,” Bukele said, referring to the “first 238 members of the Venezuelan criminal organization.”
He added on Twitter, “As always, we continue advancing in the fight against organized crime. But this time, we’re also helping our allies, making our prison system self-sustainable, and gathering vital intelligence to make our country safer—all in a single action.”
Trump later confirmed the move on Truth Social, accusing President Joe Biden and the Democrats of being responsible for the criminals’ presence in the U.S. He wrote: “These are monsters sent into our country by Crooked Joe Biden and the Radical Left Democrats. How dare they!”
He continued, “Thank you to El Salvador, and especially President Bukele, for understanding this horrible situation that was allowed to happen due to Democrat leadership in the United States. We will not forget.”
Trump Defends the Move Amid Judge’s Ruling
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the judge’s decision, asserting that the deportation did not violate any court order. She emphasized that federal courts have no jurisdiction over international matters, stating, “A single judge in a single city cannot direct the movements of an aircraft carrier full of foreign terrorists who were expelled from U.S. soil.”
Senator Marco Rubio later commended the action, saying “hundreds of violent criminals were sent out of our country,” and expressed gratitude to President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador for facilitating the transfer.
Trump further claimed that the Tren de Aragua gang had ties to Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. He ordered that any Venezuelan national in the U.S., aged 14 or older, identified as a member of the gang could be “apprehended, restrained, secured, and removed as Alien Enemies.”
Defending his decision, Trump stated, “Over the years, Venezuelan and local authorities have ceded control of their territories to transnational criminal organizations, including TdA. This has created a hybrid criminal state that is perpetrating an invasion and predatory incursion into the U.S., posing a substantial threat to the country.”
