Rare facts about the astonishing Melanie Griffith

Melanie Griffith’s life has been a true rollercoaster ride. The iconic actress, who is the daughter of actress Tippi Hedren, made her screen debut at just 12 years old and has since starred in numerous major films.

While her career was flourishing, Melanie’s personal life remained in the spotlight. She has been married three times—including to actor Antonio Banderas—faced struggles with addiction, and raised three children.

Her children from her first two marriages, Alexander Bauer and Dakota Johnson, had a turbulent childhood, particularly since they had to navigate life with a mother dealing with personal challenges at the time.

In the 1980s, Melanie Griffith became a striking figure. She exuded sensuality in a way that was more typical of European actresses than their American counterparts, yet her acting abilities were undeniable—though she may not have fully realized her own potential. Many remember her fondly from films like Working Girl and Paradise.

Born on August 9, 1957, in New York City, Griffith was the daughter of Peter Griffith and the legendary Tippi Hedren, known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Looking back, Griffith’s life has been both extraordinary and tragic. The actress, often cast as a strong yet alluring character, faced personal hardships, including a car accident, battles with alcoholism, and three divorces.

From the very start of her life, Melanie was exposed to the pressures of Hollywood. Her mother’s fame, along with an extravagant childhood, was unique even by Hollywood standards. At seven, Melanie’s mother married agent and producer Noah Marshall, and the couple decided to raise lions after a trip to Africa. Their home became an unconventional zoo, with lions, tigers, and even elephants roaming the house in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

“I grew up with lions, tigers, and two elephants,” Melanie later recalled. She even shared her bed with a pet lion named Neil, which was documented in Life Magazine.

At 14, while shooting The Harrad Experiment, she met her first great love, Don Johnson. The pair quickly became inseparable, despite their eight-year age difference. Melanie’s mother, concerned about the relationship, eventually relented. At 15, Melanie moved in with Don, and by her 18th birthday, they were engaged. They married in Las Vegas in 1976 but split after just six months. However, they later rekindled their relationship, marrying again in 1989.

In the early stages of her acting career in the 1970s, Griffith starred in films like Night Moves and Joyride. But it was the 1981 film Roar, in which she acted alongside her mother and raised lions for the film, that turned tragic. Melanie was injured in a lion attack that left her fearing for her sight. She needed plastic surgery, and her mother contracted gangrene from the attack.

Antonio Banderas, Dakota Johnson

After recovering, Melanie continued acting, appearing in Body Double, Something Wild, and Working Girl, the latter earning her an Academy Award nomination. She also remarried in 1981 to actor Steven Bauer, with whom she had a son, Alexander. They divorced in 1989.

Melanie and Don Johnson’s relationship remained complicated but was filled with deep affection. The couple divorced once more in 1996 after the birth of their daughter, Dakota Johnson, in 1989. Melanie has always maintained that despite the tumultuous relationship, she will always love Don Johnson.

Dakota Johnson, now a famous actress known for Fifty Shades of Grey, had a challenging childhood due to the instability of her parents’ relationship. She spent much of her early years moving between homes and dealing with the pressures of a complicated family life, which led her to therapy from a young age. Despite these challenges, Dakota found solace and support in her stepfather, Antonio Banderas, whom Melanie married in 1996 after meeting him on the set of Two Much. The couple had a daughter, Stella, and Banderas became a father figure to both Dakota and Alexander.

Banderas and Griffith’s marriage lasted until 2014, but their bond remained strong after their divorce. Even after they separated, Banderas continued to play a significant role in the lives of Dakota and Alexander. In fact, he has referred to Dakota as his “radiant” daughter and expressed pride in seeing her grow as an actress.

At 65, Melanie Griffith remains single and continues to focus on her family. Her last film appearance was in 2020, where she shared the screen with her daughter Dakota in The High Note. She is currently writing her memoir, likely reflecting on the many milestones of her life, including her battle with cancer. Melanie was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2010 and underwent surgery to remove cancerous cells from her nose, an experience that took a toll on her emotionally and physically.

Today, Melanie is a strong advocate for cancer awareness and continues to support Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Despite the highs and lows of her life, including her personal struggles and public challenges, Melanie Griffith’s resilience and generosity shine through.
