Whether or not you believe in miracles, the story of Parker Grelecki from Georgia is undoubtedly an inspiring example of one that seems to defy the odds. His journey, as his father puts it, is a testament to the power of unconditional love.
Parker was born in 2008 with hydrocephalus, a condition that causes an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain. For Parker, this meant that only 5% of his skull contained brain matter, compared to the 90-95% seen in typical infants.
Doctors initially warned his parents to prepare for the worst, but it quickly became clear that their little boy wasn’t ready to give up.
A Tough Start
Most parents say they just want their baby to be healthy, regardless of gender, but for Crysie and Ryan Grelecki, that simple wish was complicated by a difficult reality. In 2008, they were ecstatic to learn they were expecting, but at 20 weeks into the pregnancy, a routine ultrasound revealed troubling news. The nurse noticed that their unborn son, Parker, had an unusually large head. She immediately raised concerns, and further tests confirmed that Parker had a blockage between the third and fourth ventricles of his brain, which prevented spinal fluid from draining properly. This caused the fluid to accumulate, putting pressure on his developing brain.
Hydrocephalus affects about two in every 1,000 births in the U.S., but for Crysie and Ryan, this was an unthinkable diagnosis. Despite their shock and fear, they resolved to stand by their son unconditionally. Crysie found comfort in a song that reminded her of God’s promises: “God will make a way, when there seems to be no way…” This mantra gave her peace during her pregnancy, reinforcing her faith that there would be a path forward for Parker.
A Challenging Birth
Parker was born in September 2008 via C-section at 39 weeks, weighing just under 6 pounds. His brain contained less than 2% brain matter, and over 98% of his cranial cavity was filled with fluid. The birth was chaotic, and no one was sure if he would survive, let alone lead a normal life. But with their unwavering love and support, Ryan and Crysie remained by his side through every uncertain moment.
“I was by his side the whole time—talking to him, praying over him, holding his hand, rubbing his head. That unconditional love just rushes over you,” Ryan shared.
Medical Intervention
At just two days old, the doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta began draining the excess fluid from Parker’s skull to alleviate the pressure. This allowed his brain to grow and develop as it should. Shortly after, Parker underwent several surgeries, including craniofacial procedures to correct his skull malformation. The goal was to expand the skull and separate the bones that had fused prematurely, providing room for his brain to grow normally.
Dr. Joseph Williams, Chief of Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery, recalled, “Our goal was to open the skull and create space for his brain to grow.” After these surgeries, Parker was able to go home at just two weeks old. By the time he was 20 months, he had undergone seven successful surgeries, with his recovery impressing doctors and family alike.
Overcoming Obstacles
Parker’s road to recovery wasn’t easy, but he defied many expectations. Though it took him time to sit up and hold his head steady, he quickly surpassed developmental milestones. Remarkably, Parker skipped crawling altogether and began walking as soon as he was able. His parents credit much of his success to the excellent care he received at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where the staff became like an extension of their family.
As part of his physical therapy, Parker participated in activities like tennis and swimming, which helped him build strength and improve his muscle development.
A Miracle Child
Today, Parker is nearly unrecognizable from the tiny, frail baby he once was. His golden hair and glasses frame a bright, engaging young boy who has far exceeded the expectations of his doctors. He excels at school and has a magnetic personality, endearing himself to those around him. According to UGA Miracle, Parker also demonstrates an incredible capacity for social interaction, despite the challenges posed by his condition.
His mother describes him as a “chatterbox” and a “loving child”—traits that reflect the love and support surrounding him, both from his family and his medical team. “We are beyond thankful to be Parker’s parents and continue to watch him progress,” say Ryan and Crysie Grelecki.
A Bright Future
As Parker approaches his 14th birthday in September 2022, he continues to thrive. Despite his early health struggles, Parker has developed a deep passion for sports, particularly as a sports commentator. With a remarkable memory and a love for sharing his knowledge, Parker has already made a name for himself as an announcer at local high school football games. His enthusiasm is infectious, and he has become known for his natural talent and excitement.
Though Parker faces challenges related to the brain damage he sustained, his story is one of triumph. He has proven that even the most difficult circumstances can’t define a person. His parents, Ryan and Crysie, consider themselves blessed to have him in their lives and to witness his incredible journey.
Parker’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that miracles do happen, and that love, hope, and perseverance can help overcome even the most daunting of challenges.
