Paul Harvey, the renowned news commentator and pioneer of talk radio, was one of the most recognizable voices in the United States, reaching over 24 million listeners at the height of his career. His distinctive staccato delivery made him a household name, and his insights were always sharp and spot-on. But even he couldn’t have predicted how his famous words from 54 years ago would resonate so powerfully in today’s world.
I came across this speech recently and was struck by how incredibly relevant it is to the issues we face today. It’s from a broadcast by Paul Harvey on April 3, 1965, in which he started with the chilling words, “If I were the Devil…” and went on to describe a series of prophetic ideas that eerily align with the challenges we are now experiencing.
Here’s what he said:
“If I were the Devil…”
If I were the Prince of Darkness, I would want to engulf the whole Earth in darkness. I’d have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be satisfied until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree. So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States.
I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve, ‘Do as you please.’
To the young, I would whisper, ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that ‘man created God,’ instead of the other way around. I would whisper that ‘what is bad is good, and what is good is square.’
In the ears of the newly married, I would whisper that work is degrading, and that cocktail parties are good for them. I would caution them against being ‘extreme’ in religion, patriotism, and moral conduct.
And to the elderly, I would teach them to pray, but say after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington.’
Then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors on how to make lurid literature exciting so that everything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV stations with dirtier movies, and vice versa.
I’d infiltrate unions and encourage more loafing, less work. Idle hands usually work for me. I’d peddle narcotics to anyone I could, sell alcohol to the distinguished, and tranquilize the rest with pills.
If I were the Devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellects but neglect to discipline emotions; let those run wild. I’d get an atheist to front for me before the highest courts and have preachers say, ‘She’s right.’
With flattery and promises of power, I’d get the courts to vote against God and in favor of pornography. Thus, I would evict God from the courthouse, from the schoolhouse, and eventually from the Houses of Congress.
Then, in His own churches, I would substitute psychology for religion and elevate science as a new god.
If I were Satan, I’d make the symbol of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.
If I were the Devil, I’d take from those who have and give to those who want, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. Then my police state would force everyone back to work.
I’d separate families, put children in uniform, women in coal mines, and objectors in slave-labor camps.
If I were Satan, I’d just keep doing what I’m doing, and the whole world would go to hell as sure as the Devil.”
These prophetic words from Paul Harvey, spoken 54 years ago, seem remarkably prescient when you look at the state of the world today. His insights into societal, cultural, and political changes resonate now more than ever.
I remember listening to Paul Harvey with my mom in the 1970s, and it’s astonishing how accurate his words were. Everything he warned about then is happening now. Truly an incredible man with incredible insight. If you agree, share this story. It’s a powerful reminder of the clarity and foresight Paul Harvey had.
