Donald Trump demands removal of Presidential portrait, slams artist

President Donald Trump isn’t holding back when it comes to his portrait at the Colorado State Capitol.

He is now calling for Democratic Governor Jared Polis, whom he describes as “radical left,” to remove the portrait, which is currently displayed alongside other U.S. presidents.

Trump made his frustration known on TruthSocial, stating, “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves.”

“Purposefully Distorted”
Trump, who has previously boasted about being a “wonderful-looking man,” places a great deal of importance on how he is portrayed. However, he is far from pleased with one particular artwork — a portrait by Sarah Boardman that hangs in the Colorado State Capitol. Trump is demanding that Governor Polis remove the painting, claiming it was “purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before.”

Trump also took aim at the artist, Sarah Boardman, noting that she had painted former President Obama during his time in office, and did a “good job” with that portrait. “He looks wonderful, but the one on me is truly the worst,” Trump wrote on TruthSocial. “She must have lost her talent as she got older. In any event, I would much prefer not having a picture than having this one.”

A Point of Controversy Since 2019
While Trump’s current criticism has caught attention, the portrait has been hanging in the Capitol since 2019, during his first term. Trump claimed that many Coloradans had reached out to express their displeasure with the unflattering image. “They are actually angry about it! I am speaking on their behalf to the Radical Left Governor, Jared Polis, who is extremely weak on crime, particularly with respect to Tren de Aragua, which practically took over Aurora (Don’t worry, we saved it!), to take it down. Jared should be ashamed of himself,” Trump wrote.

The artist behind the portrait, Sarah Boardman, is a British-born artist based in Colorado Springs, and she was also commissioned to paint portraits of former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Boardman’s portrait of Trump was unveiled in August 2019, and at the time, she described it as a neutral portrayal, saying, “My portrait of President Trump has been called thoughtful, non-confrontational, not angry, not happy, not tweeting.”

Boardman emphasized, “In five, 10, 15, 20 years, he will be another President on the wall who is only historical background, and he needs to look neutral.” She concluded, “Please remain respectful – this is about portraiture, not politics.”

Governor Polis’ Response
In response to Trump’s recent comments, a spokesperson for Governor Polis expressed surprise that the President was focused on the artwork at the Colorado State Capitol. The spokesperson said, “The State Capitol was completed in 1901, and features Rose Onyx and White Yule Marble mined in Colorado, and includes portraits of former Presidents and former governors.”

“We appreciate the President and everyone’s interest in our Capitol building and are always looking for any opportunity to improve our visitor experience,” the spokesperson added.
