Before meeting the little one growing inside her, every parent faces the thrilling wait of nine months. There’s no greater joy than hearing the first cries of a newborn when they finally enter the world.
For some parents, however, the birth of their child can unfold in ways they never anticipated.
Mary and Brad Kish from Illinois eagerly awaited the birth of their daughter in the late 1990s. Mary’s pregnancy had been smooth, and the delivery was uneventful. There were no signs of any issues with their baby girl, Michelle, during the birth.
But when Michelle opened her eyes, the doctors immediately noticed something unusual. They couldn’t immediately identify the issue, so they turned to medical textbooks and consulted with a geneticist from another hospital.
Michelle’s face appeared wide and childlike, her hair was thinning, and her nose resembled a small beak.
After further examination, Michelle was diagnosed with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, a rare genetic condition with only 250 known cases worldwide.
“At Children’s Memorial Hospital, where Michelle was born, no one had ever seen this condition,” Mary recalled. “When the doctor gave us the diagnosis of Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, my heart sank. I was terrified about how we would care for a child with such a rare genetic disorder.”
Michelle was diagnosed with 26 of the 28 symptoms associated with the syndrome. It affects just one in five million people and comes with a host of health challenges.
Along with Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, Michelle also has dwarfism. As a result, she is much shorter than her sister, despite being just two years apart in age.
Michelle’s condition requires significant medical support, including the use of an electric wheelchair, a hearing aid, a probe, a respirator, and visual aids.
Her family has spent considerable time in the hospital due to her condition. Despite being 25 years old, Michelle is sometimes mistaken for a child because of her appearance.
“Now, Michelle is a 20-year-old woman, smart as a whip, and happier than ever. She’s one of the happiest 20-year-olds I know,” Mary shared in 2018. “She brightens everyone’s life with her joy. She knows she’s different but doesn’t let it define her.”
Michelle is a remarkable young woman, overcoming numerous challenges with resilience.
She looks up to her older sister and dreams of having a boyfriend, though she doesn’t mind his height since almost everyone is taller than her. She hopes he would have long hair, though.
Michelle also has aspirations of becoming a doctor one day!
