Tragically, this was the heartbreaking reality for the parents of Laura Hillier, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the tender age of 13. After a tough four-year battle, she was declared cancer-free, only for the illness to return with a vengeance.
Laura, a bright and beloved student at Nelson High School in Ontario, Canada, passed away on January 20, 2016.
Her family shared the devastating news through a Facebook page created to keep friends and supporters informed about her journey.
“She fought valiantly, and we know you would have been so proud of her. Her grace, bravery, strength, and vibrant spirit shone brightly until the very end,” her family expressed.
In a heartfelt tribute to Laura and her remarkable bravery, her classmates and teachers came together to create a special modification for her casket, reflecting the deep love and admiration they all had for her.
Soon, images of Laura’s casket began to circulate online, capturing the attention of many and highlighting the profound impact she had on those around her.
In late January 2016, Laura Hillier lost her battle with acute myeloid leukemia at the young age of 18, while she was awaiting a transplant. Reports indicate that she passed away in the hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. Laura’s journey with cancer started when she was just 13, following her leukemia diagnosis. After enduring a challenging four-year fight and numerous treatments, she was finally declared cancer-free.
In May 2015, unfortunately, Laura’s cancer returned with greater intensity.
Laura, a student at Nelson High School in Ontario, Canada, was cherished for her passion for music and theater.
Her classmates, wanting to honor her memory, chose to adapt the tradition of writing notes in yearbooks for Laura’s funeral. They aimed to give her a heartfelt send-off that reflected the love and admiration they had for their dear friend and fellow student.
The outcome was as wonderfully touching as anyone could imagine. In tribute to Laura’s life, her friends, family, neighbors, teachers, classmates, and the hospital staff who cared for her all wrote heartfelt notes on her casket.
Their personal, meaningful messages adorned every inch of her coffin.
Laura’s family felt a wave of emotion as they read the heartfelt messages of support.
One message said: “You had a gift for music. You were creative. You showed such kindness. You were my closest friend.”
Another one stated: “So courageous and resilient. You will forever be a hero.”
Purple, which was Laura’s favorite color, was beautifully showcased at the funeral. The church was filled with purple flowers, and everyone in attendance wore something purple as a tribute.
It’s clear that Laura left us far too soon, but it’s truly touching to witness the immense love and support from her community.
